Done many trips, including session in Whistler. Although nothing beats some of the Candian terrain on an epic powder day, I have found Japan to have more consistent powder days over all. Also like the smaller crowds in Japan (although Niseko can get busy).

I learnt to board in Buller some 15 years ago - don't think I will ever go back

Niseko and Rusutsu booked for next year

Clearly you are doing it wrong if it costs you more than going to Aus.
That said, I'm off to Perisher in August, and Japan in Jan. Haven't been to an aus resort yet
The only reason i found it more expensive than a week in Melbourne was because we tacked a week on the end of niseko in tokyo having a few sherbets every night. If you just do a splash and dash then you are right good sir.

You are going to be bitterly bitterly disapointed with perisher. Only good thing is skiing in jeans and a t shirt.

Cross country skied to My Kosioscko back in primary school, and 8 years ago spent 3 days in Queenstown. My tip don't eat yellow snow.

I'll conceed getting to the snow here is cheaper. but not by a huge amount if you pick the right times. my flights per-mel-cb and cbr-per this year are $700, cheapest I have gotten to japan per-syd-nrt return was $990

Just a note, Sunshine just closed this weekend. I believe it had been open since early November, all real snow. I'm looking forward to next winter already, driving up to the mountains every other weekend and home every night after a day of boarding should be fun.
