ATO Refund Scam: 2014 Edition
FYi:
From: Australian Taxation Office [mailto:notice@ato.gov.au] Sent: Thursday, 24 October 2013 9:35 AM To: herp@derp.com.au Subject: Australian Taxation Office - Refund Notification Australian Taxation Office 10/24/2013 TAX REFUND NOTIFICATION After the last calculation of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a refund of 9513.95 AUD. For more details please follow the steps bellow : - Right-click the link on the attachment name, and select Save Link As, Save Target As or a similar option provided. - Select the location into which you want to download the file and choose Save. - Open the file Microsoft Word file to view the details. Kenton Abernathy, Tax Refund Department Australian Taxation Office There is no such e-mail address notice@ato.gov.au nor would the ATO e-mail you regarding a refund adjustment 'let alone e-mail tax payers at all'. P.S: I wish my name was Kenton Abernathy, just sounds so regal. Let it be noted that there are some cases when the ATO will e-mail you but you will know in advance and it wouldn't be in relation to a matter such as this'. Also look for tell tail signs such as how the date is formatted.

I'm pretty sure ATO only contact you via post or phone from my experiences. Never heard of them emailing.
Good work.

I remember a similar scam a few years ago and trying to convince a customer who was photocopying all of their documents to send off to a "tax official" who was going to send them $10000+. His response when I said it was a scam was to say "whats the worse that can happen?"

apparently only a handful of virus scanners will pick up this attachment as well unless they've updated their definitions since.

If its the same one that hit excel/pdf docs recently, the only way to fix this was restoring a backup prior to infection.

Quote:
- PAYG Withholding discrepancies; - PAYG Instalment discrepancies; - TFN Withholding; and - Primary Production Averaging. In relation to my point about e-mailing This is generally due to ATO audits whereby they will forward information to you/you will forward information to them BUT this will be discussed during a phone conversation. I would strongly suggest that any correspondence be discussed with your registered tax agent.

I had one of these emails a while ago. Still amazes me how people fall for spam.
