when i went to get mine out of storage they looked for them for ages, ended up finding them in the disposal box due to be destroyed the next day. they said i must have asked for the plates to be destroyed (which i definety didnt)

i was just lucky, one day later and i would have had to buy new ones.

No can't keep them, just hand them in at the licensing centre and then get normal plates for your car.
Tell them that you want the plates kept in storage, cause you will be putting them on another car later.
When you hand the plates in the operator will write it down in a book that they have for plate storage and returns. Just remember the date when you hand them in so that when you go back to get the plates tell them the date so it's easy to find in the book as to where they put the plates and get them back.
I did this 6 months ago. It will just cost a change of plate fee from memory. It's about $15 each time.
If they loose the plates they should get them reprinted at no cost to you.

as everyone has stated, you cant keep the plates. must be handed into one of the licensing places for storage til you have another vehicle to put them on. the usual $18.40 for change of plates, $14.50 to re-issue the plates you had in storage. you dont need to remember the date when you had them put in as it doesnt make it any easier to find them. if they have stored the plates correctly - which is usually in alphabetical order - then they should have no problems finding it. yes if they do lose your plates they will cover the cost of a remake, which happens from time to time.
