Looking Into Getting a Dog

In the coming weeks we will be looking towards getting a dog from the pound. Generally speaking we will be looking for something that is very kid friendly and not to high maintenance; what breeds should we be looking at?

Having not owned a dog in many years we are aware that the traditional dog collar has been replaced with a brace type setup, what brands are people using, and what types/styles should we be looking for?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I use a Gentle Leader which goes around the head/nose of my Labrador.

I like it because it gives me control of her nose. Where her nose goes, the body follows.

Get a Staffy!

Good to see you getting a rescue dog too - well done!!!

Cheers Blues, if not gifted IMO it's the only way.

In regards to the lead we were thinking something along the lines of this:

As it puts less strain on the neck and possibly gives you move control over the dog?

We've also heard that eye protection is something else worth considering as sun reflection off pavement can cause serious eye damage in the future?

Are you looking at a big dog or like a lap dog? From experience in currently owning a Maltese shitzhu and a husky I'd say go a bigger dog, they're just all round better

I've had bull terriers in the past, they are a lovely dog, very loving and well family orientated

Anyways hope you find a good one at the pound, make sure to look into family history for abuse/neglect, never know when they might snap from a memory of bad owners, you don't want your kid in the way when it goes down

Ohh and yes +1 for harness around the chest, I have my husky in a harness when we walk, mainly because he has such strong pulling power, but I find it easy to control him with it on
