Default whats the rules ?

I was going for a lil drive last night through Northbridge when a copper who was comming from the other way flagged me down and told me to turn my Fog lights off . I was just wondering what are the rules down here regarding your fog lights are you not ment to use them unless its foggy or did this copper just feel like being an arsehole.

Yeh, youre not meant to have them on unless conditions permit. He wasnt too much of an areshole because he didnt fine ya

I think the reason is the foglights are a nondirectional light/beam - causes more of a problem for oncoming cars vision, hence the ruling.

The ADR (federal level) says that your fog lights must be wired in your car to
come on with the park lights, and stay on with the main (low and high) beam.
It must also have a seperate switch to turn them off.

The state govt regulations say that it is illegal to have fog lights on with anything
else other than park-lights (yes... this is a direct contradiction to the ADR) and
you can only have them on during "abnormal atmospheric" conditions.

So basically, your car MUST allow them to come on, otherwise it is a yellow,
but if you use them when there is no fog then you get a driving offence.

As mentioned above, there is a direct contradiction here between the federal
and state laws regarding the wiring of the vehicle and how this relates the
driving regulations.

Basically, leave them off. The fine is 3 points and $200 at last check.

Of course it's gets foggy here in Perth all the time!!! Most cars over here don't come with rear fog lights so why front ones? I live in the Swan Valley and the street lighting out this way isn't that great, plus there is a lot of bushland and wildlife. I always drive with my front foglights on as they light up the side of the road and you get to see that stray kangaroo before it jumps out in front of you. Don't know if the police would buy this as a valid excuse but I'll continue to use them and just hope I don't get pulled up for it. It could be the difference between having time to stop or swerving off the road........

I drive with my Fog Lights on Night and Day. I Just Leave My Lights on and my Car turns them off for me. Haven't had any trouble for them, but my car being an 06, they are smaller and probably less "spotlight" material than earlier models. But i pass police cars night and day and have never been told to turn them off.

I have been told by police at boose bus to turn them off too, just say you didnt know because they are standard on the car. The cop would have to be an arsehole to fine you for it lol.

Fair enough to those that live out in the sticks to use them, but for people that drive around the suburbs with them on all the time (yes you Kym it's completely unnecessary.
