New Zealand drifting star "Mad" Mike Whiddett has an internet hit on his hands with a stunning drive across the South Island's Crown Range highway.

The mountain pass, which links Wanaka and Queenstown, was closed for the unique filming opportunity allowing Whiddett to express fully the huge 750 horsepower of his modified Mazda RX7 through the 47 corners over the 10.4km section of the road.

While there is smoke aplenty as the RX7 is hammered through the alpine route, there is little margin for error, and the whole event is backed by some superb photography with the scene 2mins 17sec into the clip being one of the highlights.

"I think drifters have an innate ability to slip from reality when driving up a road like the Crown Range in normal circumstances," Whiddett says.

"We imagine drifting through the turns, the gear changes, the footwork, the hand brake and of course stomping on the gas.

"So for me, having the opportunity to get behind the wheel of my machine, push it to the limit and conquer the Crown is a dream turned into a reality.''
