Default Fuel quality tolerances

Wasnt sure where to post this, but here goes...

I'm fairly pedantic sometimes, and I have been filling up at the same servo for a while now. Always the 98RON from BP. Choice of servo was due to the price was more competitive than nearby competitors.

Anyhow, car hasnt been running too smooth of late, and certainly didnt like mornings.

And then I screwed up my scheduling and was going to run out of fuel far from home and my preferred servo, so I called in to a different servo at filled up. Since then the car is purring like a kitten. Starts fine, idles beautifully. Absolutely nothing was touched or changed besides the point of purchase.

Is it possible that perhaps the servos tanks are contaminated slightly or perhaps even they are adulterating the fuel slightly? Should I query it with the station manager or perhaps a governing body of some sort? I am curious to try the old station again and see if the car's habits/flaws return with the fuel. That would clearly indicate a problem there.

Anyone else experienced something like this or heard of it?

Hey Karl,

I've always made it a habit to only use the really busy BP's. You have to remember that as the price of fuel goes up, less and less people will be using ultimate. Fuel goes off after a relatively short period and this cause directly affect RON as well as may other qualities.

Also the older servo's have older tanks which do break up over time and can contaminate fuel.

Nifty point Darren - I'll start looking for a nice busy one to use...

Cheers.

could also be the servo you went to was running really low on fuel, and you sucked up the sh*t from the bottom of the tank

I've heard that theory (especially about car tanks) but what I don't understand is if the pickup point for the fuel is always at the bottom of the tank, then wouldn't you be picking up all the stuff from the bottom anyway?

Spare a thought for us poor suckers up here in sunny Broome. We have Premium Unleaded, and thats it. It costs $1.39c/L for rubbish. I found also that if i let teh tank run close to empty before refilling it runs all the shit in my tank. The car runs like absolute crud then, doesnt boost probably, sounds horrible.

Maybe in future try not to let the tank run down to empty?

Yeh that could also be a good plan, refuel at half tank. Wont be a drama in city, but annoying on long country runs planned for future.

Side note - is your car silver? I saw a couple of wrx's when I was up there a few months back. Parked over by the Pearl Lugger bar (back of Roebuck), or something like that... Looked nice if it was you.
