Default Digital TV Reception

Hey All,

I just got a shiny new plasma tv over the weekend, so I set it all up yesterday and ran through the digital channels. Channel 7, 9 and SBS are coming through nicely, but I can't get ABC or Ten at all.

I'm a noob when it comes to things like this. So, do I need a new antenna to get nice digital reception or should i climb on the roof and maybe twist the antenna around a bit? If I do need a new antenna, can anyone recommend a good installer?

Cheers guys!

get a signal booster, will increase the strength of your aerial to increase your reception. available from retravison or harvey norman

where do you live?
i'm in the hills and can't get ABC digital or HD either, though 10 is fine. i find myself having to watch ABC via Foxtel.
make sure any connections in the aerial cable (joins in extentions, and the connection to the set top box/wall) are secure and that the signal doesn't change when you fiddle with them.
if all else fails, you can get a signal amplifier from Dick Smith/Tandy/Harvey's pretty cheaply...

also how old is the cable from wall plate to the arial couldnt hurt to replace it with
quad shield RG6 cable. and put new ftype conenctions on it.

and antenna may need slightly adjusting.

i replaced mine with all foxtel grade RG6 through out and made heaps of difference.

then once u redo the arial or cable u need to retune the box do auto search.
it has to re-scan the channels if u change points or retune the Arial. so it can find the highest signal setting for each chanel again

anyone know of the old 'mod shop' type setups where you could get satelite tv for a small outlay? not necessarily foxtel, just more chanels?

i had mega problems with the 'stock' antenna cabling in my house and digital channels kept dropping out. I did what nvrenuf did and ran quad shield rg6 throughout, redid all plugs in the walls and also bought a sick antenna from Altronics. So good now, although god damn channel 10 seems to drop out occasionally. Everyone i know with digital has problems with channel 10 :/

Heres a few things id recommend before you go and spend any money, first, go into the tuning section and do some fine adjustments, i found on my set top box, that on auto tune, they wouldnt quite tune in properly on a few channels and i had to manually do it.

Check the signal strength for those channels, if its low then....
play around with your antannae a little.

if its high...
The last thing I would try and check, is see if there is anything around your house or nearby that may be causing interference, some receivers dont like certain frequencies and may not function as well as they should be.

Is the digital receiver part of the plasma, or a seperate unit?
