Landcruiser or Patrol?

Which would be a better base for a towing/off-road/beach 4x4? Thinking older chassis say 98-2004ish?

Already have a Chev 6.5L Diesel motor that would go into the car....OR would you tune up the 4.2L Turbo diesels they come with?

Do either have any inherent chassis, suspension, driveline problems?

Owner of a 105 series Landcruiser.

Either will work, bit like Subaru vs Mitsubishi.

Worst point, Patrol 3.0l but not a problem for you.

Ride wise, the independent front is better.

4WDing live front axle is best. (Hence 105 rather than the 100 series)

the Nissan 4.2 diesel turbos are pushing 200hp + and 600nm + these days

For V8 diesels Duramax is the new best thing

Early GU (Y61) patrols had an issue with the 5th gear drive splines (usually caused by old farts towing boats/caravans in 5th gear), it's not a major issue but when you test drive be sure to use 5th at 100-110 kph & see if you can feel any gearbox vibration.

The Patrol feels more 'planted' on the road than the 100 series cruiser.

Check all for chassis rust -especially around the back end (if fitted with a tow bar) older models can have cancer from salt water/ boat ramp use.

GUs probably a cheaper donor car as well, but I dislike the rear barn doors, they also can't carry anything over standard 33 tyre and rim from that vintage unless they have had the hinges addressed.

fit a Kmar / replacement rear bumper with swing out carrier if going larger than 33 ?

I'd be going a swing away carrier (on whatever make you go with) for large heavy rubber as Seagull said.

Nice nice. We have a 91 landcruiser with brunswick V8 in it. Car is almost stuffed. I personally reckon its at risk of getting yellow stickered, but my Dad thinks its fine.

Plan would be to pull out the V8, refresh it and put it in a newer chassis. Total budget would be around 30k....

Car gets used for beach launching boats, horsefloats, paddock work etc but needs to be good enough for longer trips up north etc....

Would you go down this path or could you get something better for about 30k?
