Landcruiser or Patrol?

Which would be a better base for a towing/off-road/beach 4x4? Thinking older chassis say 98-2004ish?

Already have a Chev 6.5L Diesel motor that would go into the car....OR would you tune up the 4.2L Turbo diesels they come with?

Do either have any inherent chassis, suspension, driveline problems?

Jeckle 14-09-2012 07:53 PM

Owner of a 105 series Landcruiser.

Either will work, bit like Subaru vs Mitsubishi.

Worst point, Patrol 3.0l but not a problem for you.

Ride wise, the independent front is better.

4WDing live front axle is best. (Hence 105 rather than the 100 series)

seagull 14-09-2012 08:17 PM

the Nissan 4.2 diesel turbos are pushing 200hp + and 600nm + these days

For V8 diesels Duramax is the new best thing

Rossco 14-09-2012 10:14 PM

Early GU (Y61) patrols had an issue with the 5th gear drive splines (usually caused by old farts towing boats/caravans in 5th gear), it's not a major issue but when you test drive be sure to use 5th at 100-110 kph & see if you can feel any gearbox vibration.

The Patrol feels more 'planted' on the road than the 100 series cruiser.

Check all for chassis rust -especially around the back end (if fitted with a tow bar) older models can have cancer from salt water/ boat ramp use.

Jeckle 14-09-2012 10:30 PM

GUs probably a cheaper donor car as well, but I dislike the rear barn doors, they also can't carry anything over standard 33 tyre and rim from that vintage unless they have had the hinges addressed.

seagull 14-09-2012 10:56 PM

fit a Kmar / replacement rear bumper with swing out carrier if going larger than 33 ?

Rossco 15-09-2012 12:38 AM

I'd be going a swing away carrier (on whatever make you go with) for large heavy rubber as Seagull said.

Nice nice. We have a 91 landcruiser with brunswick V8 in it. Car is almost stuffed. I personally reckon its at risk of getting yellow stickered, but my Dad thinks its fine.

Plan would be to pull out the V8, refresh it and put it in a newer chassis. Total budget would be around 30k....

Car gets used for beach launching boats, horsefloats, paddock work etc but needs to be good enough for longer trips up north etc....

Would you go down this path or could you get something better for about 30k?

seagull 15-09-2012 12:33 PM

knocked this up for the old girl

Nice! what year patrol is that? more pics?

tukangbaso 15-09-2012 08:16 PM

hey,
i own an 06 GU patrol with the grenade ( 3.0 ltr turbo diesel ) engine in it.
the 4.2 turbo diesels in both patrols and cruisers are ridiculously overpriced IMHO
if you want a 4wd machine get the patrol but if you prefer to go on long drives etc i think the cruiser is a better option.
the cruiser have weaker CVs and driveline than patrols but like people pointed out the patrol's barn door and rear chasis where the rear springs sits are known to crack from overload so you need to look out for these things.

seagull how much do you charge if i want one of them for my patrol? :)

MY99GT 15-09-2012 08:25 PM

That looks the goods Seagull! I work for/with Nissan and that looks better than most of the "factory" items i see ;)

jEstEr? 15-09-2012 09:14 PM

Pete, I'm looking at offloading my '96 80 series 4.2 in the coming months if you're interested

seagull 15-09-2012 10:51 PM

MY99GT
Yes mate I know

207 de 16-09-2012 06:43 AM

Good ifno gents! Yeah Ive noticed how the landcruisers 4.2TD hold their value so much! well, they are stupidly expensive to start with...

Matt, your 96, is it in good nick? kms etc? Could be interested but was really after something a bit newer.. What are you replacing with?

jEstEr? 16-09-2012 07:15 PM

Its pretty good (as they say, for its age) relatively low kms for an 80 series at ~290k. I have a work car and other tow vehicles available to me, it very rarely gets used, 3-4000km a year at most so its just money sitting on my front lawn basically.

207 de 17-09-2012 07:01 AM

Hmm, hey can anyone point me to some good 4x4 forums that would have a cars for sale sections?

Knowing thats generally the place to find/get decent cars, just like p-wrx!

plenty of good info there about patrols and 4wd trips etc

Taktics 19-09-2012 08:06 PM

I will get a patrol 4.2TD inter-cooled(earlier one came non inter-cooled), if they are maintained well, they will out last the chassis easy. They also hold their value because Nissan dont make them anymore and more so because they are such a good japanese built engine. If i had one ill get it tuned with more boost and open up the injector pump. The non common rail or common rail 3.0i are rubbish. Or if you have spare coins, turbo a 4.8i petrol and go nuts :D

I work @ Nissan so i could be bias. :)

MY99GT 19-09-2012 08:08 PM

Takooooooooooooooooooooo

XT43 19-09-2012 08:54 PM

What's wrong with the 3.0lts? Are they rubbish in the way that you don't get bang for buck if you start playing with them ( boost etc )? Or do they blow up? I was under the impression the early GUs were not so flash but figured they may have sorted issues by now?

BALISTC 19-09-2012 10:05 PM

They're rubbish in the way that you get lots of bang whether you play with them or not, and as a result you need to fork out lots of bucks.

Philbo 19-09-2012 10:09 PM

Burke they go BANG ! Just like a 205 with 2 bar :P but worse.

Taktiks you have a PM.

XT43 19-09-2012 10:27 PM

Lol, useless cunts Nissan are then!

What's yours then Philbo? 4.8 petrol? What's it like on fuel?

Philbo 19-09-2012 11:01 PM

Best so far is 12l/100 avg is around 16/18. Towing Sam's car to Collie it returned 22l/24/100 but towed the 2.4ton up Collie hill very well and it's comfy as for travelling on and off road on a little bit of a offroad recently it was awesome fun !

tukangbaso 20-09-2012 06:40 PM

i've seen a 3.0 ltr turbo with 260xxxkms original mileage off a 2004 patrol before and plenty more on the patrol4x4 forums doing over 200xxx kms on original engine. i think like anything the cost cutting of most car makers are ruining their reliability but i think for what you pay it's worth it . once it goes bang just buy an old GQ and put the 4.2TD in it :) or even gen4s

Philbo 20-09-2012 06:42 PM

340000km still on the original motor.

Its not hard clocking KM on the 3.0i in fact I've seen plenty, but what sort of repair had to be done before getting to that amount of km is a different story. I would much rather a 4.2 then a 3.0 thats all. I did drive a decent 3.0i yesterday, tho i am certain the thing was chipped and tuned properly.

At the end of the day, 4.2i is worth the money. :)

12l/100!!!!! highly doubt it sorry, auto or manual? Best figures iv'e seen for a 4.8 is around the 16l/100 mark. Recently took my 08 auto for a run to esperence and only got 19l/100.... And thats standard height without a roof rack etc sitting on 110-115.

Its a manual....has exhaust and extractors and a walbro fuel pump. Has a tracklander full roof rack too. Im using the app "Fuel Use" off the android market to track it all as I read some right horror stories on patrol4x4 of the thirst of the 4.8. Getting a similar device to the scangauge shortly though to give me more accurate results but even from my calculations around town im returning 14l/100.

P.S The 12l/100 was recorded heading to my parents place in Mandurah sitting on cruise at 95kmh no more.

I would redo the maths dude.
An '05 Patrol 4.8 petrol is quoted as 17.7/100km as standard and then you have exhaust, extractors and a bigger fuel pump, sounds way to good to be true I'm afraid.

Strubaru 25-09-2012 03:06 PM

finally a patrol with a decent donk in it :D

Yeah I know what you mean, have put x country intercooler and bigger exhaust with manual boost controller on it to keep it cooler and hope it doesn't blow :)
