Default What lens do i want ?

Hai there!
So as i've mentioned I'm keen to upgrade from the stock lens. Currently I'm running:

Canon 350D
Canon stock twin lens kit (18-55mm F3.5 & 75-300mm F4)
Canon 50mm F1.8

I'm looking for a multipurpose walkaround sort of lens to replace the stock 18-55mm. I take a lot of motorsport pics but want to try taking some more landscape/arty pics. I know i want something a bit wider than the stockor, and something which is good in low light. Also, as I'm a cheapass and i'd rather spend money on my impreza than my camera, i'd prefer something sub 1k

suggestions?

If I wanted somthing wider and for a 350d would get this, Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, which is around a grand or a 17-40 f/4 which is an L lens but isnt as wide and is around a grand too.

Depends if you ever plan on upgrading camera body
for your camera id recommend a 17-40 f4 but 24-70 F2.8 be a Ausome lens for the fstop.

I try to keep all the lens to 2.8 now. great for low light. But stick with L series glass too.

Canon 10-22mm or Canon 17-40L are both about 1k.

I went for the 17-40, 10-22 is next as its brilliant.

Dont be tempted by the sigma 10-20mm, its not great. You could always pickup a 17-85 IS USM cheap off someone else who is upgrading. This lens is quite decent, its not as good optically as the 10-22 or 17-40 though. Range is great and Image Stabiliser is handy.

Yeah i know will but i have just learnt now that getting the better lens makes a lot of difference. i have used the sigma as well thats what i started with.

24-70 2.8 sigma is a nice lens saying that but make sure you upgrade your firmware on the 350d apparently canon made it so sigma lens didn't quite focus right . then they got cought and had to release it in a firmware update but didn't really advertise it.

told from service agent.

I agree about buying the better lenses Tim, the 10-22 is an E-FS so you cant use it on a 5d but its a good lens for the money, I rekon my 24-105 L didnt show all its quality until I put it on the 5d! Low apature L glass gets expensive but its worth it

Yeah i noticed heaps of difference in going 5d as well . but even on the 350d i was getting good photos from the L series glass.

I like to think its more the quality of the dirty stock lens that I'm maxing at the moment and i don't see the need to step up to a 30d/40d or 1d/5d etc.

I tend to think the 24mm will be too far away for a walk around lens?
