cheers guys, sounds good...

in terms of calibration devices, dont you just use them once per monitor?? If so why can't a few of us put some money together and buy one. No point spending $300 and using it once i reckon. Or I can pay someone some $ to calibrate my monitor...

If you can't stretch the budget to beyond a grand, I recommend a Viewsonic. I had a Samsung before my current monitor, and a Trinitron tubed Mitsubishi CRT before that (before it exploded in front of me).

Nothing came close to the Mitsubishi CRT, but the Viewsonic is very colour accurate straight out of the box to my surprise. I get my prints done at Fitzgerald, and they are very close.

I have a Spyder 2... I'm about to throw it in the bin. I don't know if the Spyder 3 is much of an improvement, but I borrowed a workmate's Gretag Macbeth and it came up trumps. Couldn't get anything close to resembling a colour accurate monitor with the Spyder 2

Is yours spyder 2 express or pro?? If you seriously going to chuck it out i might just take it off your hands and see if it improves anything

i had some photos done by snapfish which came by mail yesterday and the colour + contrast looks exactly or at least very close to what i've got on my monitor. On the other hand i had these photos printed at Harvey Norman and they looked too dark

i've seen junk lcd's that were not able to be calibrated simply because they were that shit that even with hardware measurement tools they could not be brought into line.

Purchased as the Express kit. It's the same piece of hardware it's just the software that varies.
I acquired the Pro version software and used that. Still have it here

Going back to the 6bit/8bit monitor talk...

thinking of changing to apple.... is imac 24" a 6 or bit 8 bit display? The glossy thing pisses me off a bit though. Anyone here using it for photos? How do you find it? Any printing issues (oversaturation etc)??

I use a 23" apple Cinematic and its 8 bit which isnt glossy for editing., Yeah the Glossy screen would annoy me too, prety certain the imacs are 8 bit, the 20" ones were not 8 bit but im not sure if they have fixed this now was a big thing about it, apple said they were when they werent.

2.5k for a dual core intel with crappy 9400m graphics built into a monitor... hrmmm. Its certainly sexy but you could built a = spec pc for under 1000 dollars easily. (and i have no idea if the imac's monitor is actually up to the task you really want it for)
