Default Setting up an Itunes Server/Storage

My setup at home outside, is a laptop with all my music on, plugged in to a stereo. I use my Iphone with the 'remote' app as the remote control. I don't want to use the laptop anymore, but use something like an external drive that I can somehow connect to with my Iphone? I know you can get NAS boxes(?) but they're pretty expensive and are they even wireless? Any ideas? I suppose an external drive connected to a wireless router could work?

I wonder if this could work?

Just get an airport express. It will connect to your wireless network and plugs into your speakers and you can control it wirelessly so your laptop doesn't need to be outside?

I bought a 2TB western digital network drive, the software is shitola but it once configured it does what its meant to and it's just like having a shared drive on the Network which was important for me because I wanted my Mediagate to recognise it.

Does the drive need to be wireless? Do you have a spare network point on your wireless router?

AirPort Express with AirTunes FTW! I have a couple round my house - you can select which AirPort you want to output the sound to (can output to all of them if you want) and the overall sound level right from the Remote app.

We have a computer setup in the study which has all the music and just leave iTunes open on it. No reason you couldn't run it on a headless server if you wanted.

You can order refurbished ones off Apple's website for $130 rather than the usual $150. I have ordered several refurbished AirPort Express units and they come in new sealed packaging with no marks to the casing whatsoever. Look brand new to me!
