Hey folks,

I'm trying to find out if there is some way of mounting my Canon 5D Mk II so I can shoot video as I drive. Initially I'm looking at using it on road trips, but at some point in the future I'd like to start doing track days; so I imagine the system would need to be able to withstand a decent amount of g-force.

I'm looking for a setup that will allow me to have the camera positioned centrally looking out between the two front seats. Given the weight of the camera and lens, I was wondering if anyone knows of a floor to ceiling setup, possibly with a steadicam-type arm so the camera doesn't end up shaking during filming? Obviously some sort of tethering would be needed to ensure the camera doesn't go flying if it somehow detached from the rig.

Feel free to make any suggestions.

Manfrotto do quite a few camera mounts that you can use in your car, Besides suction caps to stick onto your back window you can also get a mount that screws into your baby seat strap point on the rear parcel shelf.

With the weight if the 5D, it would need to be mounted to some type of roll cage I would think, however think in terms of the helemt type video cameras for a couple of hundred dollars, which produce fair video, and easy to mount.

I've got one of these which I use for surfing/windsurfing. Probably overkill 4 what u need as it's waterproof. But really good solid unit. Takes a lot of punishment.

Cheers for the suggestions. It's given me a few ideas to work with.

Could possibly try using a fat gecko mounted to the rear windscreen, I believe they are rated for holding 9 pounds (4.05kg).

I've been keen to get hold of something reliable for surfing and windsurf speed sailing....this looks the goods. Has it been reliable and do you use it as a helmet mounted unit for both applications? Have you tried boom mount for windsurfing?

Nah not tried boom mounting. Its really robust & produces dvd quality video. It takes up to 8gb memory sticks. It's pricey $900, but I bought a cheaper make one for 300 which was a pos, so definitely worth the mone. if you have a look on their site u can see all the various mounting options & accessories it has. I use it mounted on a gath for both & used it for snowboarding too. I'll see if I can upload some footage to youtube.
