I get my gear from these guys, good prices and service

http://www.camerasdirect.com.au

eg Canon 5D MII $2597,

But buy the best you can afford, even drop down a body eg get a 550D instead of a 60D (unless the frame rate is an issue for you), and spend the difference on quality lenses.

The size of DSLRs is what puts me off them
Check out the Lumix GF1..

They are a great camera and indeed a large step up to a point and shoot. Not as good as your SLR for instance 5d mk2.. But for something easy to carry its great. You can grab em in 2 variants 20m or 14 - 45mm.. On special for $770 at Camera House

At the end of the day its not as sharp and crisp as a decent SLR with good lenses, however the image quality is very impressive and will not disappoint..
