I recently had a Canon 550D as my 1st DSLR and i couldn't fault it. Was a superb 1st camera. My friend had a Sony (can't remember the exact model) and the 1st thing he said to me was to buy a Canon or Nikon, because as said above... lenses are everything.
I have since sold my 550D due to having a clutch to pay for  but when i get a new one it will def be Canon again.
