I've got the 600D and it's a great camera with a very good sensor and the flip screen is very useful at times. If you need to save $$$ go for the 550 though as they are virtually identical.

You can get screen protectors like the ones you get for mobile phones.

I had a DSLR, but found it a PITA to carry around and downshifted to a Canon G11. If I was in the market now, I'd be looking at the micro four-thirds personally (like Sony NEX, Olympus PEN, Panasonic G etc). Not a massive array of lenses, but I'm not a pro so I dont think they are required personally - they will take a good enough shoot for the average Joe who wants a better quality pic than a point and shoot (although there are plenty of people with DSLR that use them as a point and shoot - such a waste IMO).

As with all DSLR threads, imo buy a cheap body to start with and spend your money on lenses. Lenses are what makes the picture.

SLR with some crappy kit lens will not produce anything better than a point and shoot camera.
