I realise the photo below isn't that great, hopefully you can see the kind of photo I was trying to get..
What I was hoping for is some tips on getting a good photo of this type.
I do know the lighting could use improvement, but tips on getting good close range lighting, while maintaining the background exposure etc...
any constructive tips in general? (aside from getting a better location for both the cars)

Set your camera to landscape. Take some shots. Have a look at the settings the camera is using (iso, shutter speed, aperture) and play around with those settings in manual mode.
Better lighting would be better for the foreground like you said.

im also learning but i think you can try playing around with the metering to get better lighting.

Try keeping the foreground in the same light as the background or use a flash on the object to light it up.

Slow shutter speed (1/60th of a second), small aperture (22) = large focal range (distance and foreground in focus).

Fast shutter speed (1/500th of a second), large aperture (2.8) = short focal range (background out of focus)

Yep that would have been me. Mrs was ill so no long drive, had to make excuses for trips to the shops
