The exhaust was replaced from the bottom of the manifold through to the rear.

I have the stock one including the cat, muffler and piping at home.

Was serviced roughly 5000 kms ( 6 months ) ago so oil change etc same time.

Any ideas where I borrow/buy a cheap scangauge...

Could be coolant I guess, the temp didn't change through the whole scenario and couldn't find any evidence of fluids of any sort in the bay or underneath where I parked.

The best way I could describe it is hot smelling.

Perhaps some oil or grease on a hot surface but I can't find it and the smell has abated.

I called Subaru Osbourne park about the OEM ones...

I called Subaru Osbourne park about the OEM ones and yes i think they were about $140 but the guys quoted me that for each cover meaning $280 which I think is a bit much for a small cosmetic product....
