Ok got a mate to look at it this morning, it's def the gauge itself. I think its a dummy gauge :-(
So, gonna buy either an ecudatascan or take the plunge and order a defi gauge and control box.

well originally i copied the way that it was...
well originally i copied the way that it was installed on my mates bug-eye. it was plumbed into a pipe that ran to the actuator.
Having since done some research it seems i need to plumb it...
