The theory is that the OEM sock on the bottom of the pump flows better and doesn't "fuel surge" as much as the supplied walbro one. (assuming you bought the walbro with the Subaru fitting kit)

You should be good without a tune, it may run...

You should be good without a tune, it may run ever so slightly rich depending on how tired your old pump was. If your fuel pressure reg is still in good condition (i've never heard of one failing...)...
