Fork out the $1000 now for a proper tune, then when you upgrade the turbo etc later on, you'll only need to pay a lower cost for each retune required... Otherwise, deal with it as is, hope it doesn't blow up and then pay the $1000 when you've just forked out for the turbo etc..

$1k for a tune or $4k+ for a complete engine swap.... That's a hard one.

it is for some punters

as mentioned a number of times here, i'd be investing in tuning equipment if you want to learn the diy approach.
a hks knock-amp with afr sensor attached will give you 50% of the information, the rest comes from experience in knowing what will and wont work. paying for a tune is much cheaper then buying the tools and learning the basics. no point in just knocking down a heap of ignition load points without knowing if these load points are really the ones causing an issue. |
My 2c.
Jungleboy seems to think there's no need for a wideband to tune .....Sorry but from experience & like everyone else has said you need to invest in some form of a wideband. The Techedge unit I post in your other thread is the best bang for buck as it allows logging to a laptop too....For less than $300 all up. Blindly 'playing' with a tune will lead to failure. I wouldn't try to teach myself tuning on an unknown/ uncommon engine combination such as yours. If you need to run around on the stock mapping may I suggest you run wastegate pressure (7psi?) and limit the rpm to a reasonable limit (5000?)....Even then there's no guarantee you'll be safe, transient knock is the killer. |
wideband is imperative
