A Legacy of Subaru Libertys – the evolution
The Subaru Liberty has been a staple in the Australian line up since 1989. Known as the Legacy in other markets, the Liberty introduced a number of Subaru firsts, including the introduction of horizontally-opposed EJ engines. The second-gen’ Liberty saw another Subaru trademark development, being released exclusively in AWD. The LX, GX, RX, and Heritage model grades offered a wide variety of Libertys to suit each buyer’s needs. Following on with the theme and continued development, the third-gen’ Liberty first appeared on the Japanese market in 1998 before hitting Aussie shores a couple of years later. Featuring a 2.5L as standard this family sedan had established itself as a real gem in the Subaru line-up. Featuring a drastic change in exterior styling, fourth-gen’ Liberty re-defined its image as an elegant and luxurious vehicle that could be used on a daily basis. This platform served as a valuable stepping stone for the development of features such as Subaru’s Eye Sight technology. Bringing CVT to the masses, the fifth-gen’ Liberty was another radical development in the now long and lustrous Liberty line up. Featuring another drastic styling change and a new automatic gearbox, the Liberty was as smooth and comfortable as ever. Now with over 25 years in research and development, the brand new sixth-generation Liberty transformed itself yet again, combining boxer engine technology with the Symmetrical All Wheel Drive (SAWD) system for a balanced and precise drive, the new Liberty sets the benchmark for mid-size sedans with unparalleled performance, fuel efficiency, comfort and safety. Including the EyeSight® driver assist system as standard to improve safety across all models features like Brake Light Recognition, Pre-Collision Steering Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Brake Assist and Pre-Collision Throttle Management; all part of a complex system working together to keep you safe! Agree. A gen 4 tbsti wagon is still on my wishlist. I am always impressed with how well my wife's GT wagon does smooth cruising and next minute blasts to 7000 rpm.
