Poll: Shutter Island was he a nutter?

I watched Shutter Island last night. Firstly absolutely brilliant movie.

So my question... was he a nutter or not?

I feel that he was due to you never seeing him on the mainland, the opening sequence was of him on the ferry with his "new" partner.
The spooky looking bird as he walked in had her finger over her mouth as to say that she was told to keep quiet.
If they were conducting such horrific experiments in the lighthouse, and all of the staff knew, the public would have known.
And finally, after all the shit the poor bloke had gone through. e.g Concentration camps and what his crazy bitch wife did, most people would definitely be damaged goods after that.

What are your thoughts? Oh and if you haven't watched it... WATCH IT!!

P.S What did the note mean? I know the 67 part, but the law of 4 line?

jkelaart 15-08-2010 09:39 PM

Wasn't it though that they recreated his fantasy in real life, so they just made up the story about the light house?

DAN682 15-08-2010 09:44 PM

I don't know. I think I will need to rewatch it.

This movie has had me thinking since last night. Damn suspense movies with a twist!

EXPLICIT 15-08-2010 10:08 PM

Ending leaves you thinking, was he nuts, was he legit and made nuts, was the island centre going to great lengths due to them actually carrying out the brain experiments.

Fantastic movie!

BeeFor 15-08-2010 10:19 PM

Just another mind fuck from the big man Leonardo....
Inception, was he dreaming or not in the end!?!?!?!

Sorry if its a little off the topic.

Well said! great movie, to tired to think of anything even semi intersmectual to say.

Dicaprio seems to be coming up trumps in all the movies he's been in recently, and I hear Inception is a brilliant movie as well.

DAN682 15-08-2010 10:37 PM

Ok, I googled.

Read this:

astralex 15-08-2010 10:44 PM

To me, the last scene when he says "Which would be worse, to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?" made me think perhaps he didn't relapse... But farking good movie!

R H C P 15-08-2010 11:09 PM

My take on it was that he deliberately pretended to still be in his FBI agent delusion so that they would give him a frontal lobotomy. So that he didn't have to live with the memories of what he'd been through.

As for Inception, who knows... I don't think it really matters though, he was happy with the 'reality' he was living in, whether that top stopped spinning or not.

Dawn Patrol 15-08-2010 11:53 PM

To me, I think he was definitely crazy throughout the bulk of the movie.
Still undecided about the end if he either realised he was crazy, and then his body reset.
Or he realised he was crazy, but still acted it, so he could permanently forget his past by getting the lobotomy.

Kato 16-08-2010 06:51 AM

I bloody hope this thread title hasn't spoiled the movie for me!

You were given adequate enough time to watch it :)

Actually, now you are armed with this info, you will look so smart to your missus when you know exactly what is going on :)

Pettata 16-08-2010 08:49 AM

I gonna d/l it just so I can vote on the pole...

Haha...

I meant to watch it at the cinema, but got busy. Now they are advertising it on Fox... Should have watched it on the weekend. The advert makes a lot more sense now :P

I recommend watchig it in Bluray. I am so happy that I did! Anything less would have been a travesty on the movie.

apg39 16-08-2010 09:37 AM

DON'T READ THIS KATO:

I'm pretty certain he was fine but the life events sent him loopy & into this random alternative persona. The treatment they provided did work, shocked him back to reality, but once he remembered all this stuff & the reoccuring dreams he pretended to still be bonkers because he would rather recieve the labotomy than live life with those memories. Been a while since I watched it but after he said those last lines didn't he go with the Doctors without hesitation, 'surrendering' in a way? Shows he knew what was happening.

Rossco 16-08-2010 11:40 AM

^^ Exactly what I though after watching it last night.

Went nuts, living out his delusion 'snapped' him out of it, but he didn't want to relive the memories of his kids deaths & killing his wife...So he faked his relapse.

There's a DVD rip that is Spot on in torrent land, I grabbed it after reading this thread....

NVRENUF 16-08-2010 12:59 PM

Torrent land looks great, Do you find most the backups are real?

I see there is some latest movies there

Rossco 16-08-2010 02:56 PM

look for 'Maxspeed' & 'FMX' as the uploaders...Pretty much all of theirs are spot on either DVD rip or Bluray rip > 6gb.

Always check the comments on the torrent before you start wasting bandwidth!

its been out on DVD for a while now too....

If it's on DVD, it's fair game mate. Your own fault for reading the thread...

http://www.vcdq.com/ is another good one to see what has been released lately.

The thread title is my issue with this thread. And I assume Giddy's too.

Without reading anything inside the thread, the movie's plot has probably been given away (I am yet to see the movie).

Had the title been 'Shutter Island: Plot/Ending Poll' then people like me who haven't seen the movie, would ignore the thread.

Get the sand out of your vaginas and harden the fuck up.

You all had long enough to see it :)

evlgurl 17-08-2010 09:07 AM

Inception is just awesome. Def recommend.
Think I may have to watch this now since dicaprio was incredible in Inception.

MattH 17-08-2010 09:27 AM

Was he pushed to do an insane thing, by the women he loved - yes.

That tipped him over the edge for sure - consider the women you love most in the world taking away the things you have created with love and tenderness.

Was he insane in the end...I say No.

He could not live with what had happened and "played" along to get the lobotamy (SP?)

Yeh I think that's the way I saw the ending.

phizzle 17-08-2010 12:33 PM

Watched it last night because of this thread. AWESOME movie.

Agree with most here. He was crazy, he stopped living the delusion after it was played out and off meds but decided to go with them for the trans-orbital labotomy because he didn't want to live with the memories of what his wife did and what he did to her.

"What's the greater tradgedy; to live life as a monster or to die a good man?"

Same thing happened to me, bloody mate told me the ship sank in Titanic, so never bothered watching it. I just don't get why people do that.

ImPreSiV 14-01-2011 10:33 AM

That was worth the bump for a 7 month old thread.... for sure!
