That's turbo flutter.

You'll need an FMIC and NOT RUN A BLOW OFF VALVE (or you can run an adjustable BOV with the tension cranked right up, so it only opens under high boost being recirculated) if you want to get a similar sound to that, preferably stainless steel piping leading up to the turbocharger's compressor housing (inlet). The more volume of air between the compressor housing and the throttle body, the deeper and longer lasting the flutter will be. If you're running high boost however, it'll typically woosh straight past the compressor fins and out towards your intake. Happens on my car.

Most turbochargers used on subarus handle flutter pretty well. Both VF8 + TD05's i've had on my car after 10,000kms of recirculating boost pressure have no fucked seals nor end float on the compressor wheel.

Prefer the noise of flutter over a ricey ssqv or something pathetic like that.

it works fine with a top mount. plenty of cars out there with just a CAI and adjustable BOV that make plenty of noise

You can make a Forry with a Top mount flutter, but it won't sound anywhere near as typical (in terms of pattern, depth, and sound - or as longer lasting) as your 'typical flutter' in a car with a stainless steel/cold air intake w/ a FMIC kit. If there's a larger volume of air ricirculating and conflicting with your compressor fins - it's going to be far more characteristic.

I haven't used a SSQV so I don't know if there's an adjustment for the spring; but if I were you - lose the BOV altogether and flutter is inevitable.

It's the turbo itself tha is making the chipmunk chirps, i run a stock BOV on my car now for a little more fiel efficientcy, and my car flutters on low boost or when i take my foot of accelerator slowly...

Yep definitely gets annoying. Only kewl bovvy type sound i still like is the one that comes off the WRC cars. Particularly the Focus. Not sure if that's a BOV or not though .. It's a more of a 'chirp'.
