Default Tool to hold the cam gears

hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has the tool to hold the Cam gears. Got to do the girlfriends timing belt soon, just want to borrow or even buy the tool if possible to do this job.

Didn't want to use my 3/8 rattle gun on it, just in case, even tho i very doubt the bolt will snap or even damage the camshaft.

pm me if you have one.

Thanks
chis.

I assume you're changing the cams seals?

you won't need a rattle gun but you'll need a 10mm male hex socket & 1/2 inch ratchet...They aren't 'that' tight.

well... i was reading thru the shop manual and they are about 65nm i think, and you wont be able to hold that by your hand, as he was saying you need a holding tool.

If its an earlier model they are easier, with the later models 06ish and up the bolts are really soft and round out easily, just a warning.

i have come across them when they are very very tight, even if they havent been off before. once corrosion has set in it can be a real problem. I have had one with the engine out of the car, the 1/2" air rattle gun couldnt even crack them.

If you cant find the propper tool then try holding the timing belt still with the crank pulley and crack the bolts. sometimes you might need 2 people.

I first try with my panasonic 1/2" rattle gun, if that doesnt get them off i use the above method.

Hmmm ok i've done my own on my GC8 wrx a while back and i defantly needed the tool, cause it was tight.
my gf's car is a bug eye RX so luckly only two to take care off. If no one has the tool, thats fine i'll just go see Jim at blue star and see if he can get his mate to make me one up.

So its just a SOHC?
I would just do what white rx said and hold the crank still and crack them.

Since it is SOHC even easier. only 2 i think they are just a normal 17mm head on the cam bolts, not int hex like the turbo engines.

I dont think that there is a tool to hold those cams, as they don't have the massive flats on the end. One will be a metal pulley and one a resin one.

If you have probems with the belt skipping, force the tensioner down with a spanner on the idler pulley. but you have heaps more space than on a wrx, so even a 1/2 gun will fit in there easy.
