I have been kayak fishing for nearly 4 years now and just use a "dry bag" to store my phone, keys, camera, wallet etc in whilst on the water/fishing and never had an issue.

I have thought about a clear pouch as a "just in case" thing, but haven't had any issues yet **Touch wood**
Otherwise i might just vacuum seal my iPhone each time before i go, (tried it and it worked a treat!)

ps: Waterproof marine GPS/depth sounder FTW!!

Guy at work has the life proof case for his iPhone and uses that in the Avon Decent and has taken pics underwater with it

Not cheap (yet) but the Sony Xperia Z is waterproof. My wife uses it as her rowing meter when she is out on the water and it gets wet all the time, has also fallen into the water on the shore.

I had the Motorola defy, went to demonstrate to a mate its ability to withstand water by placing it in a pint of super dry.

It never turned on again

Do you own an iPhone?
I have just purchased and received one of these:
iPhone Cases and iPad Cases | LifeProof

Have also purchased this for when I go kayaking as extra insurance to not ruining my phone

Take your LifeProof iphone case to the next level of performance with the LifeProof LifeJacket. | LifeProof
