So I finally got around to doing the R180 swap over the weekend & all went well. Took around 5 hours for the complete swap. Its running the hybrid races to allow R160 shafts & hubs whilst running the correct spline for the R180.

I made sure the diff ratio was correct before commencing the swap, both with some help from Mt Two & by opening the rear cover. 3.9 ratio = 39:10 as seen on the crown wheel here

Out with the old - R160 & single pot brake set up.....

In with the new.

A good upgrade from what I had before, not as strong as a true STI R180 swap, but I am happy with what I have done for now. The GD rear sub frame has a better roll centre ratio & interestingly the drive shafts are only 2mm thinner on the WRX R160 to the STI R180?? Are the STI ones really that much stronger? It also seems I have gained slightly better toe adjustment.

HURRY UP NEW ENGINE, its time to do some testing

Once the motor is in, I am pretty much considering the car done, well maybe a cage.... I really need to get as much time in the seat as possible & learn how to drive. Really looking forward to Collie, so long as we manage to finish the motor, do the swap, run it in & get a final tune in it. Either way exciting times ahead.

I am hoping for 350+ hp & 430 + nm safely once it's all run in and tuned up : )

You beat me Geoff....

ARP head studs

Heads going on

Top of heads

Cams in

Rear timing cover plastics going on

Water pump going on

Vernier cam wheels on

Timing belt on

Now to get the cams dialled in, put a few other bits and pieces on & the bulk of the assembly is done. Still have a heap of work ahead though, but its getting very, very close now.

The 2ltr closed deck normally aspirated motor in the photo was removed from one of these. Just to shed some light on were closed deck ej20 motors can come from

Second generation (1990–1993)
Second generation Isuzu Aska 12875.jpg
Also called Subaru Legacy
Isuzu Aska CX
Production 1990–1993
Layout FF
AWD
Engine 1.8 L EJ18 Flat-4
2.0 L EJ20 Flat-4
Transmission 5-speed manual
4-speed automatic

With the exception of the American market, the J platform did not continue into the 1990s. Not having the resources to develop a mid-size car on their own, Isuzu forged a short-lived alliance with Subaru. This provided for Isuzu to supply Subaru with Isuzu Bighorns (rebadged as the Subaru Bighorn), while Isuzu rebadged Subaru's mid-size Legacy sedan as the Isuzu Aska. Both rebadged models were sold only in the Japanese market. There was also a Subaru Leone Van version briefly available, badged as the Isuzu Geminett II.

The EJ series engine was offered. in both 1.8 and 2.0 liter displacements. The engine has either single or double overhead camshaft architecture and pent-roof, cross flow cylinder firing chambers.

The 2.0 liter fuel delivery was managed with sequential multiport fuel injection, and the 1.8 liter engine used a modified fuel delivery system with single point throttle body fuel injection called SPFI. The DOHC 2.0 liter non turbocharged engine had a dual stage intake manifold.

The 2.0 liter vehicle came optional with Subaru's AWD system while the 1.8 came with FWD only. As with all other Askas, this was only ever available with four-door saloon bodywork.
