Default 93 GX Liberty (Budget "Track" Car Project)

It's time to introduce yet another car for me, I feel like I've been on a merry go round of car purchases over the last 18 months. Most will know I parted out a lot of the wrx to fund the purchase of an Evo V. This car was supposed to be my all out track car however it presented issue after issue (the nail in the coffin being terminal rust issues in the chassis) and funds (as well as my will to live) couldn't keep up so I decided to cut my losses and sell the car at a massive loss to move it on. It's in some dismantling yard over east now being used for what good mechanical parts it had.

After that I was pretty keen to just forget about cars for a while and take up a less stressful hobby like stamp collecting or knitting but as luck had it Troy (Amtrapid) was considering moving on his car so we got talking and a deal was struck. Knowing Troy and the meticulous work he does for others I knew I was going to be getting a well presented car that worked, and not somebody else's hot mess. The car is mostly ready to go now with just a few things for me to do before getting out into some more motorsport. I'm looking towards August and the city sprint before enjoying the sprint series at Kwinana later in the year. I've missed out on 12+ months of any track joy due to the last shitter so keen to keep this build simple and get out there again.

Current car specs:

Body/Suspension
-93 GX Liberty shell with RS radiator support
-Custom fitted roof vent
-LED Lightbar fitted to front bar
-MCA XR Coilovers
-Cusco front strut bar
-Enkei 16" rims w/RE002 tyres
-WRX 4 pot front and 2 pot rear calipers
-DBA T3 4000 rotors
-Brembo pads

Engine/Driveline
-V3 STI Engine
-VF34 Turbo
-750cc injectors
-Factory Liberty RS WAIC
-Haltech PS1000 Ecu
-5 speed 4.44 gearbox
-R160 rear diff
-Custom intake + catch can

My immediate plans:
-Fuel surge tank + 460 pump (Purchased 04/05)
-Firewall on rear bulkhead
-HC800 pads all round + PMU fluid
-New tyres (undecided)
-E85 tune
-John fowler alignment
-RACE

If anybody has coilover suggestions around the 2k mark outside of MCA I'll be all ears. Also need to find somebody who can make me a rear firewall to separate the main cabin from the surge tank.

TL;DR Bought new car, might actually get to drive this one soon

Nice work Jack look forward to seeing you out there soon.

If you've got the coin just get A050's. If you are only doing sprints and you store them correctly they last for ages.

You can always try and pick up some second handies, mine have done seven sprint events and I reckon they might have a couple more in them. They are nearly bald but still come on fast hang on really well for three minutes which is all you need for sprints.

Cheers Nick, was good to see the blue betty driving around last time I was at Kwinana.

A050s or Z221s would be what I want given no budget limits, but it may be a stretch this time around. I had some second hand z221s on the evo and enjoyed the grip even when they were getting down to bald. I'm probably looking more towards the A048/RS3/R888R range at this point to get me through the first season but I'll see how the budget looks after the first few bits are ticked off the list. I'll keep an eye around for some second handies again too.

I'll give John a call soon to discuss some options. Coilovers are next as these Teins are completely fucked and won't do at all.

My z221 mediums lasted really well but needed a minute or so to come on. I wouldn't get mediums for sprints again because of that. The softs might be good, I think Bram and Bourke have used them in the soft compound.

What size you wheel are you running?

Small update, started chipping away at removing the sound deadening and dynamat from the rear of the car. Dry ice makes the factory applied sound pads super easy to bash off, but it does nothing for the pain in my ass that is dynamat. Just using a heatgun to apply a little heat to make the adhesive go a little soft then pulling it off in small sections at a time.

That's where I've left that for now as it is an ultra frustrating job I'll return to when I've got another pocket of time. Once that is all cleaned up I'll start the job of mounting the surge tank. At this stage I am planning to run 5/16 fuel hose from the tank lid to the surge tank, then new braided teflon an6 line through the car up to the engine bay.

Also ordered and fitted new MCA XR coilovers with 9kg front and 7kg rear springs. A quick drive around the block and they are very firm with lots of feel through the road but still quite compliant over big bumps. Looking forward to racing on them soon.

Old v new
