OK folks, what's the best way of prepping the car before applying stickers??

Last time I tried this on my old car I applied some polish/wax, then gave it a light spray of mist, then put the stickers on - It didn't work very well & left some markings on the paint when i removed the stickers 2 days later (crappy polish probably didn't help).

I don't fancy fucking up the paint work this time.
