Default Aussie Cannonbal Run 2012

"If you’ve never heard of the Commodore 64, or think a record player is some kind of autoplay for a Guinness Book, then you may not remember the famous Cannonball Run events of the Seventies and Eighties. At any rate, there’s one coming to Australia and it doesn’t matter if you don’t know what it is, as long as you like fast cars and partying, you’ll be interested.

The event is about cars (fast ones) ‘driving within state laws’ across a country in a race casual drive to find keys and clues hidden at checkpoints, all pointing to a secret stash of cash – there for the taking to whoever gets to it first. There was even a couple of movies about it.

Starting in Brisbane though, the Aussie Cannonball Run will lead a 3000km route stopping off at various cities and suburbs throughout the country. Each team – two people in one car – will have to puzzle together clues and maps unlocked along the way which will point them to a locker with a suitcase full cash.

Cannonball Run event organisers are taking entrant applications right now. Better be quick though, only 60 teams will take part. The entry costs $9,995 and gets you all accommodation for the event, meals and access to loads of parties along the way.

It’s not really meant to be a dangerous race, as it was originally run in the Seventies to celebrate America’s then-new highway systems, but it was also a way of protesting against overly strict traffic laws coming into place around that time (sounds familiar).

The event will kick off with a Rat Race pre launch party and then officially start the following morning."

No doubt will remind people of this tragic version in the NT in 1994 http://www.cannonballrun.info/
