Default Aussie Cannonbal Run 2012

"If you’ve never heard of the Commodore 64, or think a record player is some kind of autoplay for a Guinness Book, then you may not remember the famous Cannonball Run events of the Seventies and Eighties. At any rate, there’s one coming to Australia and it doesn’t matter if you don’t know what it is, as long as you like fast cars and partying, you’ll be interested.

The event is about cars (fast ones) ‘driving within state laws’ across a country in a race casual drive to find keys and clues hidden at checkpoints, all pointing to a secret stash of cash – there for the taking to whoever gets to it first. There was even a couple of movies about it.

Starting in Brisbane though, the Aussie Cannonball Run will lead a 3000km route stopping off at various cities and suburbs throughout the country. Each team – two people in one car – will have to puzzle together clues and maps unlocked along the way which will point them to a locker with a suitcase full cash.

Cannonball Run event organisers are taking entrant applications right now. Better be quick though, only 60 teams will take part. The entry costs $9,995 and gets you all accommodation for the event, meals and access to loads of parties along the way.

It’s not really meant to be a dangerous race, as it was originally run in the Seventies to celebrate America’s then-new highway systems, but it was also a way of protesting against overly strict traffic laws coming into place around that time (sounds familiar).

The event will kick off with a Rat Race pre launch party and then officially start the following morning."

No doubt will remind people of this tragic version in the NT in 1994 http://www.cannonballrun.info/

90% of the way to securing a spot in this.

I have everything crossed, it will be one of those once in a lifetime deals.

Goodluck with it. Sounds like a great event.

The link with the 1994 is unfair really because other than the name the 2 events have nothing in common. 1994 was a speed event 2012 sounds like more of a touring event.

A few friends just completed the auzrun event - an aussie twist on the cannonball...

There was enough fun despite it being a touring event

I am just waiting for my friend to confirm his entry, and ill pay my share to be his tag along.

The Northern Territory Cannonball Run was held from 22 May to the 27 in 1994 on the Stuart Highway from Darwin to Alice Springs and return, a distance of nearly 1600 kms, and attracted 118 racing enthusiasts from all over the world with their expensive machines. The race contained three distinct driving phases within the one event. These were the "flying miles", the timed sectors and, covering by far the greatest distance, normal, everyday driving during which there was no competitive element. The "flying miles" were a test of a car's acceleration with cars cross the starting line at 60 km/h and 1600 m later their speed was recorded by radar, with points awarded accordingly. The timed sections of the run were approximately 100 km stretches to which set times was applied. Cannonballers lost points on these sections by arriving either too late or too early by more than three minutes. While these sections of the run were happening, the road was open to regular traffic, although police swept the road ahead, side roads were manned and the travelling public and commercial vehicles were warned. During these sections, as throughout the run, Cannonball drivers were subject to the same laws as anyone else. It is to be pointed out, though, that in the Northern Territory doesn't exist a specified speed limit on the open road.

On 24 May, during one of the timed sections near Alice Springs, a Ferrari F40 crashed into a checkpost killing its occupants, the Japanese duo Akihiro Kabe and codriver Okano (first name unknown) and two track officials, Tim Linklater and Keith Pritchard. An inquest found that the direct cause of the accident was driver error on the part of the Japanese team which entered the checkpoint at an excessive speed.
