8cm refers to the area in cm2 of the exhaust housing opening that flows to the exhaust turbine.

Smaller housing = faster spool but lower top end.

larger housing = slower spool but possibly more top end.

It is usually listed as area ratio 'a/r', Here's a better explanation:
