A little more info on the no-ethanol sensor E85 systems that were tried early on:

They used a wide-band oxygen sensors (Bosch LSU 4.0) & a broad O2 based fuel trimming map to adjust for differing fuel ethanol content (increasing fuel to bring the AFR's back to pre-set targets).

This system was a bandaid solution & did not vary the ignition mapping like current Flex vehicles do - so the gains were minimal, but E85 was cheap back then in the US of A.

This type of system was never used in nor intended for boosted applications.
