I use to work at a call centre. Getting a private number doesnt always work, the call lists we had were usually so old that we had the number on it from before it was made private (and before someone says "oh no telstra said my number has always been private they keep certain ones private all the time" bullshit they are lying to u.) only time a private number works is if you have had it for a really long time.
Gerry - the DNC register just stops your number appearing on "new" call lists at Australian call centres. It wont remove your number from the phone book (which is what most local companies will use when cold calling) and wont stop companies with old lists calling (the list are expensive so they dont get new ones often) and it wont stop international ones. Easiest thing to do is get caller ID and dont answer calls that come up saying they are from an "Unidentified Number" or from private numbers. You can also ask them to remove you from their call list when you do get a call, they are ment to remove you when you ask them too (we always did coz we didnt want to talk to the assholes anymore than they wanted to talk to us).
