At home the rule for turning into multi-lane roads is that you always turn into the nearest drivable lane. That means, in most cases, you can have people turning into a street from both sides of an intersection, or people doing u-turns, without getting in other peoples way.

Is the rule the same here?

Often I've been waiting to turn right onto a multi lane street at the same time as people turning left into that street from the other side of the intersection and had to wait for them all to finish as they're all turning into the lane that is farthest from them. If we both turn into the nearest lane to us we could all go at the same time.
This is a great idea in theory, but unfortunately I don't think most of Australia would grasp the concept and would probably create WW4!

Yes that is correct Doc BUT it was also helped by the , now removed rule in NZ, that a driver turning left gives way to someone turning right into the same road.

NZ give way rules changed

That previous "give way" rule nearly got me killed when initially driving in NZ as it's the opposite to every other country in the world.

I often do exactly that maneuver you've described with the qualification that I ASSUME that the other driver has no concept of turning into the nearest drivable lane. It has gotten me the odd look and international symbol of love.

Yeah we should never have removed that road rule. Sure it wasn't the way the rest of the world does it but it works. If we had the same rule here in WA we wouldn't have a huge backlog every time someone stops to turn right on certain roads (sterling highway springs to mind).

Sorry but no.

The law is no u-turns at traffic lights unless there is a sign saying it is legal.

Also, as per my super awesome ms paint (tm) drawing below, coming up to a green light (2 lanes turning left) and then having to dodge cars doing illegal u-turns is what shits me. No different in my opinion to having to deal with people running a red light and coming into your lane of traffic.

Ok it's illegal that's fine then but in my opinion it doesn't need to be illegal. Look at the amount of space on that three lane road. If the u-turning driver is not a complete numpty they should be able to turn into that first lane without disturbing any of the people using the slip lane who should only be moving into the two lanes on their side. Everybody wins.

Disagree completely.

1. Slip lane has a green light. If I was going along straight through an intersection, I wouldn't be expecting traffic to come from a red light just because there appears to be some space on the road. May as well get rid of traffic lights if that is the case. This is not a standard give way style corner, but a full on traffic lights blazing corner. If it is ok for the U-turn, why must I wait at the red light when there is no traffic coming?

2. Most drivers if given a green light, will not look to dodge cars that shouldn't be coming at them. Cornering at 60kmh on a green light and then suddenly a wild tradesman appears could cause a lot of problems for most Perth drivers.

3. No one in Perth can do a U-turn and end up in the outside lane. Everyone requires the whole road to turn around.

4. Plenty of legal u-turn spots further up the road. Or they could turn the corner legally and turn around in a side street or a better spot for a u-turn. This is just impatient people not wanting to do the right thing to save a couple of seconds.

5. Person doing the U-turn had no consideration for the traffic they were driving into again showing their thoughts on the road.

If it is a give way style corner, then that is a different matter (slightly). But because there is no way a driver doing the u-turn could know what the other people's intersection is like, it is simple to just make it illegal.

The fact that idiots don't understand that tailgating and braking kills road system efficiency, that "keep left" isn't optional, indicators are to advise other PRECEEDING your lane change / turn and merging isn't a race all contribute to our woeful drivers and their pathetic attitudes.
*mounts soapbox* Roundabouts?!? For me, only the "can't keep left crowd" are more annoying than peoples attempts at indicating through a roundabout.......
