with a old sony 6 channel amp that has no controls bar 4/5/6 channel selctor.. The problem is the woofer cuts and crackles at high volumes and generally sound pretty cheapo, worse than the old speakers.

they are 4ohm, is there a special wiring procedure?

also on max volume, i hardly have volume and cannot find a way to change it, it is a Clarion DXZ766 DVD HU one of the top HU in the 2006 range.

update...
now after playing them for 1sec they just cut out....

also at this stage there is only 1 speaker in, the other is still the old speaker.

could be a few things.

1 - check that the amp is ok by getting a speaker that is known to work and check each speaker output on the amp, one channel at a time on all 4/5/6 settings

2 - there should be a 'gain' knob somewhere on the amp, set it about half to three quarters. If this is too high, distortion can occur quickly

3 - make sure the cabling is all good, if the cable has been squashed or knicked in any way then this can bridge the output of the amp causing problems. Also, ensure that none of the speaker terminals or cabling is earthing out on the car.

4 - check the speakers off the deck or another amp, just to ensure that its all good

5 - make sure the + and - are hooked up right, double check it....

6 - ensure that power supply cabling to the amp is good, heavy gauge and not split etc etc..

thats all i can think of at the moment. PM me if you still can't get it.
