I have a bugeyed WRX (MY01), am I able to simply get a scoop off a newer model (MY04 for eg.) and chuck it on mine without having to do any mods?

You can't do a direct swap of an 03/05 STi Scoop to a MY01/02 Have to get a specially made one.

Then you will want a bigger topmount, and the correct underscoop splitter to push the air directly into the tmic and to prevent air getting past it.
