Do late model headunits have rca pre-outs on the them or am I shit out of luck and have to run high level inputs to an amp?
Looking at putting in a sub as a quick remove setup so the missus can still go shopping.... there is F all room in an 08 as it is.

pretty sure the standard deck doesn't include any RCA pre-outs...

you won't want the mrs lifting the heavy sub box out of the car everytime she wants to do the shopping, surely... maybe there is some alternate arrangement so you don't loose your boot space, but also get some bass... maybe a false floor?

^^^^^ sorry I gave the impression the missus would be moving it cos she won't, it will all be me....
Have also contemplated the false floor but will see where it takes me with the headunit issue.
Subaru do one for the 08 that you can get off eBay but they are pretty gay by all accounts.

Yeah, Subaru factory subs are uber ghey.

I presume the 08's have the same setup as the previous wagons with the lift up flap in the boot where the spare wheel well is? Is the well deep enough to fit a sub in there? Incorporate it into the flap somehow??

I dunno, its a thought i had with mine once, but then i filled the spare wheel well with tool kits and shit, so i bailed on that idea.

Some subs can come in crazy thin dimensions these days... I'm sure you could find somewhere to tuck one away, surely.

The stock units do not have RCA outputs. Your options are:

1) as you said - high level input into amp
2) if your amp doesn't have high level input, purchase a high to low level converter (converts high level into RCA output) connecting the converter close to the deck to reduce quality loss.
