Running 2 AMPS
Hey guys got 2 amps a Alpine PDX 4.100 and a Pioneer MONO BLOCK 1200w
i was looking at just getting a kicker comp sub has about 150rms i think...now would it be worth installing that mono block to run it or would it be better to just run that PDX for 2 channels on the splits and 2 channels on the sub....instead of running the sub off that mono block? would there be a huge sound difference if i ddnt run the sub off the mono? just trying to save money so i can sell the amp if its not needed.

Sell the mono mate. The PDX will easily run that sub and a set of splits.
Are you sure that sub is only 150RMS though? Either way, sell the mono! |

Yeah looks like the 12" is 150W RMS so you definitely won't need the mono.
Since the PDX runs 100W RMS per channel @ both 2 and 4 ohms then you simply add the two channels together to get 200W RMS for a bridged channel. (it usually isn't that simple a calculation) Keep in mind that Alpine amps consistently output more power than their ratings would suggest so you'd be looking at well over 200W RMS going into the sub so don't up the gain any more than two thirds or so! |

Running the mono would be fine, excess power is safe for speakers/Subs just as long its clean power (I use to run 900wRMS amp on a 200wRMS Sub). The PDX bridged is 200wRMS @4 or 8ohm so it does have ample power to run the 150wRMS sub.

You will more than likely blow a speaker from underpowering it rather than over powering it..
Think about it this way, if you try to tow a semi with a mini, the mini will struggle and you will pop it.. It is the same with speakers.. If you do not have enough power, the amp is laboring, this generates clipping which is DC straight to your speakers which then fries them. I would be interested to see if modern Alpine amps push out more power then they are rated at.. I would have believed this back in the day, however a lot of companies like Alpine, Pioneer and Sony are no longer making products for the enthusiasts, rather equipment that sits smack bang in the middle of mainstream. It is a shame because they do not build their new gear like the old gear that actually got them their reputation. I am not saying they make bad quality gear - simply it is now built to a price that suits the mainstream market. |

Either way, Serbaru: the PDX has plenty of power to run your sub and splits. No point running the Mono unless you're adding another good set of speakers or a substantially more powerful sub. |
