If you are going to use the waterless method YOU HAVE TO WAX YOUR CAR properly first with at least 2 coats of semi-professional wax at a minimum or you will get little scratches start showing unless you use HEAPS of the waterless spray.

But that being said, you should always have at least 2 coats of wax on your car at all times, not only does it protect your paintwork but it resists dirt and makes cleaning so much easier as 90% of dirt and marks just rinse off with high-pressure water.

(By semi-professional I mean something like Meguairs Tech-wax or Yellow wax or an equivalent brand/class and that's at a minimum, prepare to spend around $150+ for really good wax)

I wash with soap and one of those microfibre noodle sponge thingies, then dry with a kenco synthetic chamois i bought from bunnings. To avoid streaking when the car has dried before I hit it with the chamois I give it a quick rinse. Usually comes out good for me, though my car is dark blue, not black, so may not be noticeable.

Every few washes (and when I have the motivation) i give it a nice polish all over. And then if I still have the motivation I hit it with the turtle wax. But thats a very rare double burst of can-be-fucked

The main thing is black cars will show up the fine scratches
more than other colours, so a chamios that might work on
other colours may not work well on a black car.

I found this out after getting my 1st black Rex back in 07.

I use a chamois to dry, then hit it with an applicator pad with Autoglym deep polish... then buff with microfibre towel.

Seems to work ok, but after a while some of the wax will show in random areas. Not sure if this is a wax issue or my buffing technique...

yeh black is a bitch, but the scratches can occur more with the washing imo.
also, drying a car thats still dirty (even in the slightest way) with any chammy will cause scratches too.

Yes it is true that most scratches occur during washing and are imparted by your sponge. Apparently, ideally, a sponge should only be used ONCE to wash a car then discarded. The microfibre ones may last a couple of washes without scratching. The bottom line is that if you are serious about finish and detail, invest in many cheap sponges.

PS...I'm not that obsessed with my car btw...and too tight arsed to buy lots of sponges!
