A lap sash belt comes over one shoulder and diagonally across the body. If you roll a car and the roof is crushed in you are not as firmly restrained on both shoulders and there is some room for movement/give towards the centre of the car and downwards. With a harness on, you are pinned back in the seat by both shoulders. If you roll and the roof is crushed in you are more likely to be held in an upright position and cop the full blow of the roof coming in rather have some room to move and soften the blow. This is the main reason some form of roll over protection (bolt in half cage) is a good idea when fitting harnesses. But in reality, heaps of people including myself have done it without cages and without any incidents. Its really just a case off assessing the level of risk in the form of motorsport you are doing, and then taking what you believe to be appropriate safety measures.

I guess I have a greater appreciation for the safety gear now and a higher value on my life, so I tend to be a bit more thorough than i was in the past...and am also probabaly going a little quicker and doing more high risk motorsport....excepting my last classic rally in 2003...a couple of stages were epically fast, dangerous and no cage...

CDR, I see what you mean, but with the standard set up your still pinned by one shoulder, and I also see that a harness will hold you upright. It really shows the importance of roll over protection/cage.

^^^ Yeah, I guess the point is, with a standard seat belt you have some chance, with a harness you have little or no chance.

This whole iodea was something I had never really considered until someone else mentioned it to me. You kind of assume you are safer with a 4 point harness on, but that is not always the case.

Certainly worth making sure the points you have it bolted to are suitable.

If you are doing that, may as well bolt a half cage in.

At least with the half cage and the car registered as a 2 seater it is legal... Harness bars like that are not when I asked at the pits.

thought it had to be a 2 door to legally have the back seat removed?

Thanks for the benefit of your experience Blaise.
It is going to be a clip in arrangement. I wont be running the harness permanently.
When I am going to be using it no doubt I will have the rear seat out.
I wont be using the crutch strap as the seat is not designed for it.

If I do end up going with the backing plates I will probably get Doug to help me out.

Dave, go see Doug... He is installing my harness atm, so it may give you some ideas.
