Default Spoiler Removal

Did some searching here and on NAISOC but didn't really find what I was after.

I'm very interested in removing the spoiler from the boot and could use some advice.

From what I can see I have 3 choices:
  • remove the spoiler, install high stop brake light & use grommits to seal the holes
  • remove the spoiler, install high stop brake light & get boot welded/filled & resprayed
  • source R or RX boot, paint & install high stop brake light

Option 1 doesn't sit well with me as I don't like or trust the idea of leaving grommits in the boot.

Option 2 would require at least 5 holes to be welded and the boot to be resprayed (see attached picture, items (B) )

Option 3 should be the simplest of all 3 (granted that the R or RX models have the exact same boot as the MY11 WRX)

From an estimate point of view I can see this easily costing at least $500, but seeing that I want this to be a perfect job cost isn't that much of an issue.

For those that have gone down this path before, could you provide any pointers or ideas for me to look at.

IMO, for a car like yours (brand new) I'd try and source a rear boot. Even go into the Subi dealer and maybe they will take ur's with spoiler off you, and replace with a RX one, so that way they can sell the RX with a WRX spoiler as a bit of a 'one off'

Saying that, in my 02, I had the holes welded by Benson and he did an amaizing job, no evidence there were holes there before.

I'm about to get 16 holes welded up in the hilux, so if I get that done before you decide, I'll let u know what the place I went to is like, because their quote was pretty cheap. Hopefully, the work is not.

I would only consider option 3 if it were my car. Easily reversed if you want change or sell.

It chops out a noticeable amount from the rear vision mirror and this annoys the hell out of me, plus so much dirt gets stuck around the spoiler.

Would still require holes to be welded/filled and painted.
The STi spoiler doesn't have a middle section that sits on the boot, its only attached on the outer most sides of the boot.

Cost of STi spoiler will be $1k+ (spoiler, painting of spoiler & high stop brake light, getting the boot welded up would cost even more)

I'll be holding onto this car for the next few years so changing back to stock shouldn't really fuss me that much, something to think about though.

Fair call.

+1 for Option 3.

If you get the right size bungs option one wont be an issue, plus using or getting more touch up pain will get them as close to the original colour as possible (would require a few coats).

I'd have a go at option one for a while and see what you think of the look (going to be much cheaper on your wallet if you prefer spoiler on).

Sourcing an R/RX bootlid in the same colour would be the most flexible option, but the most costly. You'd then have two bootlids and could swap them out whenever you feel like having the spoiler or not haha

Could always find someone with an Impreza R in the same colour (no idea if they come in the same colour?) and do swapsies for a bit, see how you like it?

Clark Rubber will give you a 99% chance of finding the right sized grommets to plug the holes in the boot, shouldn't cost more than $15 for a "set" that you pick out yourself.

Bungs look cheap and nasty. Don't do it to a new car.

Either:
- Leave the spoiler on (best)
- Replace boot with non-spoiler model
