MY11 rear shelf noise
Hope someone has an answer to this mystery.
My friend bought a new 2011 WRX sedan and from day 1 she can hear this knocking noise coming from the shelf between the rear seat and rear window. She brought it back to the dealer and they tried to fix it but the noise is still there. Coincidentally she also has another friend who bought the sme model and is having the same noise problem. Does anyone else has the same problem and if so, how was it fixed? A mechanic at the dealer try to explain to her it's because of the difference between the noise frequency of the exhaust and the frequency in the car is causing the shelf to vibrate etc etc etc.....don't know if it's true or not. |

There are three covers (for a baby restraint/harness) on the parcel shelf, these "click in" but still move around a lot.
I placed some foam underneath the caps to suppress the noise (the foam kept a small amount of pressure on the covers, preventing them from moving around as much). I'm actually tempted to get some superglue or silicone and seal off those covers, on a trip down south recently, two of those covers managed to come undone and go flying in the cabin (was a very bumpy road). There is a lot of people on NASIOC who have been complaining about noises throughout the entire cabin area and there are a number of solutions posted. You could also look at putting some extra foam lining or dynamat? under the rear parcel shelf. Essentially anything that helps to lockdown the movement in the shelf, or absorb noise and vibrations should help out.

on my 06STi I had massive problems with the rear shelf vibrating. I juts a whole lot of tissues between theshelf and the windscreen to stop it moving / cushon the vibration. I haven't noticed anything since.

I don't hear any rattles because I put on a louder exhaust. Rattle be gone. Actually I haven't heard any as yet. As Soksta has pointed out look at NAISOC or IWSTI forums as others around the world have experienced the same. One solution seems to be putting a cloth under the parcel shelf but between the rear brace if that makes sense.

I put some rubber on the mounts of the cover over the spare wheel... And no more vibration annoying noise.
I thought it was the parcel shelf and/or seat... turned out it was the spare wheel wood cover in the boot. Hope that helps. |

I have noticed from time to time, something that sounds like polystyrene rubbing, thought it might have been that cover on the spare wheel. Something to work on over the weekend

The rubber seals for the boot on both mount points

I had the same issue. It started when the rear shelf was removed for the window tint, but sounds like it would have started away. The tinter was really helpful and took the shelf off again for me and we put some extra padding under the shelf and it helped a bit for a while.
As I didn't really fancy removing the shelf again (as it was a bit of a job) I got some foam from clark rubber and from the boot you will see a few large and small holes which are under the shelf. I placed a few large pieces of foam in the holes and after a bit of trail and error I have got the noise to stop. I would say it's 99% good now. Hope that helps
