Plasti Dip Thread
1 Attachment(s)
Hey Guys,
Starting this thread for you to post ur Plasti Dip projects/pics and discussion as this new trend starts to gain momentum. There is a new Perth dealer of the stuff that can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/DiptWa Youtube it etc. if you don't know what it is. I will be doing a black bonnet at some stage and the wheels and some detailing on my wife's car . . .and who knows what else :nike: This one below was done buy a shop in the UK with a gun, not spray cans. |
Group buy?
|
I'll give the bloke a call on Monday, see what he will do.

cant tell if serious or joking.... |
What the shit is it? Is it paint in a spray can? if so what makes it so special?
|
That poor Audi :(

Its a spray on plastic that can be peeled off relatively easily if needed. It comes in cans or can be used in a gun. Its easy to apply but won't last forever. Depending on how well you do it and what areas you are applying it to, a few months at worst or a few years at best. |
Just looked it up on google. the rattle can jobs turn out uneven on big jobs and the texture of the finish is pretty poor. Seems like it would make your car look cheap.
|
Perfect for doing wheels though which is my plan.
|
Have a read through this website: https://www.dipyourcar.com/
I know it's not Aussie, but they have some really good videos and have dipped a lot of cars. |

I disagree, I think the more expensive Euro cars look great with a Matt finish and should not be uneven unless you are completely ham-fisted. Best thing, if you don't like it just peel it off, if you love it, leave it on and save for a real paint job/powdercoat etc. |
I wonder how tough it is.
|
With the heat of the wheels, won't the plastic bubble.
Adi |
Have a look on NASIOC....heaps of guys do it, even to wheels long term with no problems....and it looks great.
It looks especially good on those small exterior trim pieces, like the gay chrome boot handle thing on the newer Subarus The only reason it hasn't taken off here is the ridiculous price of the cans...they are a few dollars over in the states... Although i'm assuming that plastic dipping track wheels would be a no go due to the heat...can anyone clarify? |

Also reading more into it, the really good jobs are ding layers with fine grid sanding inbetween. |

This may help when you do your bonnet. Seems fairly hard, keen to see pics when you complete it. |
Reminds me of the scene in The Jackal where bruce willis is changing the color of his car.
Inc more illegal activities because descriptions of cars will be "It looked like a bright fluro pink skyline but had no number plates" next day pink car is black. |
plastidipped a heap of things including couple sets of rims, albeit i never sprayed it out of a gun but it's not half as good as it sounds out of a tinnie thats for sure.
$40 a tin (takes about 4 tins to do a set of rims well) and the finish is worse than powdercoating and pretty much on parr with supercheap auto spray packs....... i guess its good if you are full of regret though and want to peel it off later on (since it requires no prep and peels off whenever you want in one big hit) good for badges and small things though... would powdercoat over plastidipping rims in future though, same money and a professional good finish that wont ever fall apart.. and less DIY. |
Found it for 25buks a can in Perth

recently got a can on matt black plasti-dip, and tried out a few things, not sure if im gonna keep this look though, good thing its easy to peel off

Special thanks to Argh spec, plasti dipped my wheels, the surface comes really good. $30 a can from Inallo Auto pro. They also have glossifier, metaliser and smoke tint, too
|
I plastic dipped my chrome badges black. Looks awesome on the blue!!! I think I might do my wheels black too..
|
How many cans to do it? Hard to do or normal spray can type stuff? how do you prepare the previous surface? light sandpaper?
|
no sand paper
i just used a wax and grease remover to clean the surface then spray.
peels off easy when you want it too. coverage. prob 1 can per rim if ya doing rims. i have just done badges at the moment. |
2.5 cans if u only do the spokes(mine is 18 spokes per rim), 4 cans if u do the inside too.
wax and grease remover is sufficient, i would recommend to do 7+ coats. the paint is still strong after one track day, no peeling or melting(finger crossed) |
when painting a chrome grill do I need to sand it back at all? or just paint straight over it?
|

Clean it up and spray it on |
cheers

As my new house mate is the manager of a powdercoating business I am not longer going to do any plasti dipping as I can get pc for free. Will have pics up soon of the latest cosmetic mods :)

To some of the guys/girls who have plasti dipped parts of your cars... Has it lasted? Any splitting? Ive asked around and I've had very mixed emotions about the spray cans.... but I'm considering doing my bonnet scoop in black..... Looks good in these pictures :D

Mine is fine except a few small area on the lip of the rim, maybe because rim gets quite high temp. U will be fine, many people on nasioc have done that. |

pretty awesome stuff.. Plastidipped my stock rims blue for lols. So much better than having to clean then tape up then prime, then paint, then clear.
I just sprayed and wiped the tyres after. Spent a whole 10 minutes doing all four, and when i get sick of it i can peel it off :) |
So you just sprayed the rims and wiped the tyre off? Easy enough not to wipe parts of the lip? could you spray the rim and let it dry then cut around the lip with a knife and peel the over spray off that way? or easier to wipe?
|

I posted the pic of my scoop done earlier. It's still looking the same today as when I did it. I have ordered some more and glossifier too and am going to peel off the scoop and redo it with abit more time and better finish. Definitely recommend. Havnt done my rims though... Yet |

Can you get plastidip colour matched.
Im thinking of doing the engine cover in the same orange that my car is in.. |
Will plastidip take the heat of an engine bay?
