Default Stereo install MY02

I'm going to attempt a stereo install tomorrow...
Can someone point me to the directions on getting to the headunit on a MY02 ?
Do you need to take off the glovebox?
Wheres the best place to run the amp power thru the firewall?

Where you putting the amp ? Under the passenger seat works well and hidden away. I have been happy with it and forgotten it was there.

I think it's just the plastic facia then a few screws to pull it out AFAIK.

Looking at my install, one of the grommet's on the passenger side is how you get power in .. possibly do need to remove the glove box. Do you have fuses and all that shit?

I didn't have the patience and expertise in the end and paid Westside in Morley, does lots of scooby installs.

Tuck the amp under the passenger seat, then run to the speakers from there if you are replacing them?

Cheers! and good luck, the stock system is pretty meh.

Thanks mate. Yes planning to put the amp under the passenger seat, that's where I had it in my 06 and it worked well. Then power front speakers and sub with it. Have done a few installs in the past and whilst I'm very tempted to just pay someone due to the fuckery I do get a lot of satisfaction from diy.

Under the seat is best. Velcro works a treat at holding it down too.

In regards to running your power, the right hand side of the firewall (would recommend removing your glove box and using a "snake" to pull your power cable through that grommet)

You can then either;

-run it under the carpet
-run it down the passenger side chassis rail and punch a slit in the carpet and bring it out under the seat.

Run your power and your amp remote wire (blue one) together and segregate your RCA's ...run them under the carpet and bring them out neat the AC vent under the seat. Bit fiddly to do however.

Run your speaker wire in the same manner back to the head unit and solder into OEM harness speaker wires (be sure to wire it into the right speakers or tuning will be an issue)

Speaker installation in the doors on any Subaru is a fine art.

As fair as I know, a 12mm spacer front and rear as a general rule of thumb will clear your window mechanism and also allow the trim to clear and not foul on the speaker woofer.

And if you are installing splits be sure to mount your crossover "box" securely. Having had to take the door panel off to connect one wire was a bit of a pain.

Any other questions feel free to pm me

And you may want to invest in a powered Ariel booster.

And to get to the head unit. The HIVAC control panel simply unclips, remove the climate control hose (just pops off) and using a flat head screwdriver take the 2 plugs out and lay aside. 6 screws (usually) will be securing your oem head unit in place.

Good luck

big help thanks mate. yep ive used velcro for the amp before and it worked fine. didn't realise the hvac panel just unclipped like that. was looking for screws but now i see they're behind that panel. aerial booster definitely needed as reception is rubbish.

so a couple of questions

Which amp power kit did you use ?
How easy was it to run wires to amp ?
How did u mount the amp to the floor under the seat or else where ?
Did you use factory speaker wire or aftermarket speaker wire ?
How much of interior did you have to dismantle ?

Wow. I need to get into the car audio business.

Which amp power kit did you use ?
Depends on the wattage of your amp youll need either 8AWG or 4AWG. Most likely 8AWG will be sufficient unless you're installing a very high power amp.

How easy was it to run wires to amp ?

Not too difficult... but depends on your skill level. Try to avoid running down the centre console and rather go under the carpet.

How did u mount the amp to the floor under the seat or else where ?
Yep under the passenger seat is generally the best place to mount an amp in these cars. You're best off facing the amp towards the front so that you can supply cabling to it via the holes in the carpet where the rear facing a/c vents are. And use velcro to hold it to the carpet (don't apply the velcro until you're 100% certain how the amp is gonna sit)

Did you use factory speaker wire or aftermarket speaker wire ?
Not sure about this one, I didn't replace my speakers.

How much of interior did you have to dismantle ?
These bits:
Glovebox (easy)
Passenger and driver seats (relatively easy but they're heavy well mine were so ideally have a second person helping here)
HVAC control panel and headunit surround (easy)
Centre console (easy)
Rear seat (easy)

$330 just for the cabling etc is ridiculous. You can pick all your cabling etc up for under $150 if you do it smart. I would go and see Fabian at Westside Cannington, he sorted me for all the misc bits I needed like nuts and bolts for grounding, misc cables etc.

Oh yeah go get a cabin pollen filter from Repco before you start because once you take out your glovebox and see the state of the one you already have you'll want to replace it. (unless it's been replaced already). I think mine was the original from 2002.
