Default Speaker Size for bugeye

Hey guys,

Im contemplating on purchasing some decent speakers but im kinda confused on what size speakers fit in the front and rear of my 01 bugeye. I did abit of research and found out that the front speakers needed a adapter plate/bracket to avoid the window hitting the speaker.

My question is what size are the factory speakers and if i were to purchase 6.5inch alpines would they fit in the front and rear without messing about to much?

Cheers

Not sure what the stock size is, but I just had Morel 6.5's in the front, and Morel 5.25's in the rear.

You will definitely want spacers to clear the windows... But as above 6inch up the front and 5.25 in the rears will be sweet.

Default Speaker Size for bugeye

I have pioneer 6.5" with these spacers in my bugeye without a problem

There should be a few on eBay to choose from just search "wrx speaker" on eBay and they should come up.
You should get both front and rear aswell don't think I needed the space for the rear but Subaru have different screw layout than standard so the adapters help with that.

Factory size is
Front: 5-1/4"
Rear: 4"
But you may be able to fit bigger with adapters.

There's bit of an art to quality fitting of front speakers in WRX's. A custom spacer angled to suit the sweep of the window and mechanism and also the diameter and depth of the actual speaker will yield best results. It will minimise the chance of the top outer edge of the speaker frame/basket from fouling the door trim and also the roll surround from striking the rear of the trim on outward excursion. The rear of the door trim will also need the plastic lip trimmed off carefully.

Some of the main failings of taking shortcuts to good speaker installation include poor fitment of doortrims back onto the door, vibrations, magnets and wiring fouling door mechanisms, scratched window tint etc.

Sometimes people will choose to just try to buy a smaller speaker to attempt a quick retro fit but the resulting sonic reproduction is no where what could be realised if they had a decent 6.5 inch midbass installed correctly.

And the addition of noise damping material (ie Dynamat) should also be a consideration and makes a very noticeable improvement to your listening experience.

If budget is a concern then don't spend money on changing the rear speakers and use those funds towards doing the front properly.

If you do change the rear speakers, there is no clearance to use a spacer for diameter increase. There is no depth issues as the window glass / mechanism does not go low enough to be a concern. I recommend going a 5.25 inch speaker and cutting the minor amount of metal required to allow the speaker to fit. It's defeatest to go any larger than that though because the perforations in the door trim (ie factory grille) will mask the cone area of a 6 or 6.25 inch speaker.
