Australian internet filter

The current and new labor goverment is trying to implement a mandatory filter over our internet at the isp level aka the great fire wall of china.

Need to take action now, because once the technology is in place who knows what will suddenly disappear from our internet.
as usual the 'save the children excuse' is being thrown around with the governments own tests showing an 80% drop in internet speeds.

there will be a choice between two black lists, one 'safe' for children and one that blocks out illegal material and god knows what else.
of course it will never actually accomplish its main goal as children are far too clever. But likely just end up as a mainstream censorship tool.

and at least sign the petition if not send a letter to conroy

RichX 17-10-2008 10:35 PM

I think it will turn into something which ISP's will be forced to provide as an 'option' or 'recommendation' which can be applied to any account.

There will have to be an option to not have that applied to your account though surely??

fobz 17-10-2008 10:39 PM

Anonymous proxies over VPN's or simple SSL. That way they will not
know what you are surfing and will not be able to block it.

From an IT perspective it is impossible unless they can also control our PC's.

Pimpreza 17-10-2008 11:52 PM

Doubt anyone will read it so I signed as Donald Duck with one of my shitty G mail addy's, fucked if you know who they will sell your info to, no disclaimer to sat they won't.

The plan is a blacklist for 'child safe surfing' and you can then switch that off where they will only block 'illegal' stuff.

There is no turn it off and have full internet access.

Krudd just turned us into China if this goes ahead...

So Tiananmen square never happened?

Where will they draw the line on their classification on illegal or immoral content?

For some donkey porn is disgusting, for others it is a daily part of life......

wannabox 18-10-2008 11:01 AM

Rest assured I have started stock pilling hard core porn just in case, I will have my supply of Rocco ready to come out when this happens :P

werticusness 18-10-2008 02:22 PM

here is an article explaining it.

Zeitgeist [2008], a doco about how the world is being prepped for a one world government. Anyone who hasn't watched it yet, please do!! I've been a conspiracy nut for some time and this movie/doco puts most of them together. NOT a Michael Moore style (although he does raise good points) but this movie is almost gauranteed to make you start REALLY thinking.

Kato 18-10-2008 08:51 PM

Except most of the movie is false and has no factual basis.

jezzamcbezza 19-10-2008 02:12 AM

It's [the movie] pretty interesting at the very least

Like I said, in its present form it is technologically impossible. Use a VPN
to get around whatever they install. Simple. The Govt are morons to
think they can enforce it. Within a week of it being installed there will
be easily downloadable tools to circumvent it.

scoobygez 25-10-2008 09:21 PM

anyone can get there ip address hidden or a floating ip i dont see how this can go anywere at all....

Alternate 25-10-2008 09:40 PM

Awesome, looks like we're well on our way to becoming china. Next we'll be claiming New Zealand as our own (Tibet) and hiding it from the world

werticusness 26-10-2008 12:36 AM

Im sure there will be ways around it but best to try to stop it now and save the hassle imo.

jezzamcbezza 26-10-2008 09:20 PM

Staying on track with the Zeitgeist film, why not start censoring the Internet under the guise of "blocking porn" (or whatever) they wanted to block.

"Safe Internet browsing" to those in power means blocking people from seeing films / info like that movie ???

This is better than X files!!!

Agreed. There are so many smarter programmers out there then the government can get a hold of. New generation are literally raised on a computer, like they'll be able to stop anything....retards.

there goes that off topic thread that is so popular around here :-\

Kato 27-10-2008 06:32 PM

God damn it...

How about they just turn the internet off. If this goes ahead, it will just create chaos - or everyone will just have an 'alternative' route to get their true internet.
