I'm not a hundred percent sure about your statements there in regards to seatbelts etc. But I agree fix the roads and teach all new drivers how to drive properly (Defensive driving etc). Interesting to see the percentage of funds that are raised from Multanovas that actually go back into this stuff.

Haha, I was thinking just that after I hit reply.

More traffic than most suburban streets in perth, however, my street is roughly 50% single lane (gravel shoulder so both cars get half off in order to pass - DONT GET ME STARTED ON TOURISTS IN 4WDS NOT GETTING OFF THE ROAD!). The speed limit is 90. There are potholes big enough to swallow a hyundai getz whole! At least 7/10 drivers are not familiar with the street. Often can take over 24hrs to clear away a fallen tree or similar.

Shocking when you consider it is right in one of the biggest tourism areas of WA.

Cheers,
Nik

^^^ Yup this is what annoys me the most.

I have to have more roads/signs/safety in my workshop than what is necessary on a lot of country roads. Just because its not in everyones faces, does not mean it shouldn't be fixed. Surely 100% of the cost of fines should be put back into improving our roads?

In regards to my previous comments they are all what I have personally observed. A large majority of my country mates do not wear seatbelts, drink and drive and don't care about it, speed all the time and yes back in the mid-90's I know of 2 people who to this day swear they just drove the local copper around the block.

3) The time taken for ambulance assistance is greater due to distance and Ambo centres not being manned 24/7

I agree with all your points but doesn't change the fact, more accidents happening in bush than in the city!

To be a real pain in the arse, we live in the country - not the freaking BUSH! (pet hate, ignore me on that one...)

A few of my mates, honestly, believe it is a safety decision to NOT wear a seatbelt. A recent major accident involving a father, his son, and two of the sons friends was fatal for three of them. The only survivor was the son, who was not wearing a safety belt. (Please, don't explain to me how stupid this view is, I know)

I have been in a car with a mate who was definately drunk (again, yes this is just as stupid for me as it was for him). Pulled over, breathalized, and told to be careful driving home.

A fair few people down here simply do not have a licence, either never bothered in the first place, or lost it once or twice and just let it slide. The deterrent of being without a licence, to someone who has been driving without one for years, is just laughable.

Unregistered cars, no where near roadworthy cars everywhere.

Drink driving is rampant, this is far from restricted to young drivers - everyone knows if you take the back roads there is no way in the world you will get done.

I know it sounds like I have done a 180. I still stand by the fact that alot of the people that die on country roads, are from a metro area.

I don't know any numbers, but my guess would be, there is a reasonable number of major accidents caused by kangaroos/cows. I don't really know anyone that's been here for four or five years that hasn't been in a roo encounter.

In the end, I have to admit - I have hit a tree doing over 110km/h in a Subaru. After that, I have only wanted to get another subaru - safest car on the road (forester).

Drive safe, sorry for long post.

Cheers,
Nik

Not wearing a seatbelt?? Its odd that my experiences have been the opposite.. My mates (best mate included) have died because they havent been wearing seatbelts and those that have walked away.

Roos probably do the most damage. When skippy jumps out, most people swerve, hit gravel and hit the skids. Skippy jumps away and it now looks like so many other accident scenes on country roads.

You'll never stop fatalities on WA roads. By Sunday night, the numbers would have increased by another 3 or 4. I guess when your times up, your times up.
