more country carnage huh! It's easy to see how increasing the fines and points is going to have a big impact on changing this huh! More cameras, fines, and tv adverts is never going to stop a lot of these sorts of accidents in my opinion but it government is sincere about stopping it then they better start with the country drivers IMO.

Quite often the deaths on country roads are from city people driving in unfamiliar conditions.

Cheers,

Hmm, lets see what knee jerk reaction this brings. Obviously hoons were scaring the Toyota Utility and Landcruiser, causing the accidents.

I still can't believe that some people do not wear seat belts in cars. That may have (don't know any details of the crash, so all pure assumption) saved the life of that person.

Obviously the cameras and increased fines have worked wonders so far this year to lower the death toll

It's interesting to look up the stats for the city deaths and country deaths. City has stayed quite the same over the past few years (9-12) yet the country death rate and casualty rate is growing every year (2004: 17, 2007: 28).

Surely this points to the fact they need to fix up country driving skills/attitudes and/or fix the roads out that way?

Interesting to see the stat's City vs Country, people still look at young people with and without powerful cars as being responsible for the road toll.

Well before you "City boys" rush to any rash assumptions, consider this;

On average a crash in the country is more likely to be a fatality because:

1) There are less passers by to render assistance
2) Quite often there is no phone reception to call for assistance
3) The time taken for ambulance assistance is greater due to distance and Ambo centres not being manned 24/7
4) Because of distance the time taken to reach a hospital is greater.
5) Crashes often occur at a higher average speed due to the speed limit on country roads.
6) And finally the condition of most roads is shit

These are just a few things that may hinder the country drivers... But statistics can and will be manipulated by the press at will, so don't always believe what you read

Tht is all I have to grumble about ... Drive Safe

Well while us "city boys" rush to our rash assumptions, don't forget that the "country boys" are more likely to:

- Drive without seatbelts
- Drive under the influence due to lack of taxis
- Drive over the speed limit (flame suit on! )
- Lower requirements to obtain a license (its always been the myth, if you can't get your license in Perth go to a country cop shop and drive the local copper around and thats it. Not 100% sure on the truth to that though, as I have never sat a driving test in the country).
- etc etc etc

I'm not having a go at any type of driver (country or city). What all this is pointing to are a couple of bleeding obvious problems. Correct the roads and correct the driving skills/behaviour of people.

Too many Perth drivers now have the mentality that if they sit 5km/hr under the speed limit, they are perfectly safe. There are too many other factors in driving to have this attitude.

If you do not live in the surrounding area, you cannot obtain a licence from the police station.

It is said frequently that it is far harder to get your licence in a regional area, as the officer/tester are aware of the risks of country driving.

Cheers,
Nik
